The Scene
The intimate dining room is dim. Dark woods, black booths and claret-hued table cloths are brightened by the colorful vintage liquor posters. But don't let the candlelight and romantic setting fool you. With acid jazz playing in the background and servers chatting casually with diners, the atmosphere and noise levels are more like your friendly neighborhood joint.
The Food
France meets the South with delicate Hudson Valley foie gras seared with black-eyed peas and apple smoked bacon drizzled with thick, sweet blackberry balsamic syrup. Large, plump shrimp add extravagance to fried green tomatoes and spicy Cajun cream sauce. Elegant tourneau squash dot the pan-seared sea bass and tummy-warming tomato risotto dish. The specialty Manchego cheese stuffed beef tenderloin served with tasty chorizo grits are just good ol' fashioned dig-in-good. Wrap up the meal with the warm Godiva chocolate bombe. The wine list is imaginative with many choices by the glass.

Very disappointed. For what was supposed to be relatively fine dining felt more like a sports bar with $30 entrees. First off, there was a tv on and it was so loud thAt I could not hear the person sitting next to me. The service was horrible as well. He only came to take our order and bring us the check. Although it wasn't overly expensive, the food was not worth the price. A pumpkin cake tasted different each bite, indicating that it had not been mixed properly. Take my advice and spend your money elsewhere.

Went last week and all of the reviews were great but the minute we walked in on a Friday night we had our first impression. First off, the time was 8:45 and there were 3 other tables in the restaurant. Not a huge deal because it could have been a slow night. Next, they bring us water in these HUGE bar-type glasses which I then realized are the same glasses used at TABC across the street. For fine dining these glasses were totally inappropriate. The wine menu was tiny and that night, my boyfriend and I had cocktails first so we opted for glasses of wine instead of a bottle (even smaller selection of wines by the glass). I ordered an $11 glass of pinot noir and opted not to taste it like I usually do and had to send it back. I very rarely do this in a restaurant but this wine was really awful. Not corked but obviously a very cheap wine being sold for a lot more. The avocado and crab appetizer was extremely salty; the presentation of my boyfriend's signature dish of beef stuffed with manchego looked horrendous (like it was sitting on a pile of green mush) and tasted very mediocre. My scallops were not bad but I?ve realized that it?s hard to mess those up if you cover them up with a tasty sauce. There is a lot of mention that this spot is romantic. In my opinion simply turning down the lights does not mean it?s romantic. The restaurant was so dimly lit that the lighting from the kitchen cast a harsh glare into the dining room and removed any romance. That said, the poblano corn chowder was the best part of the evening and the service was perfect.

I took my husband to 2900 for his birthday dinner and was thrilled I'd made such a good choice. We live in Louisville, KY, land of fabulous independently-owned restaurants, many of which are staffed with chefs who have graduated from local culinary school. I wanted to find a nice restaurant at which we could celebrate his birthday, but I didn't want a run-of-the-mill chain restaurant. 2900 delivered. The food was excellent -- appropriate portions and well seasoned. The ambiance was great; the lights were low. It was romantic, but not overly stuffy to the point we felt as if we couldn't laugh out loud. It wasn't too crowded. We had a reservation, and they were ready for us upon arrival. The food wasn't what I think of when I think "soul food," but I wasn't at all disappointed. I would certainly go again when in Dallas.
