Editorial Review for Sushi Zushi – by Amanda Howe

The Scene
The decor is more hip-hop samurai than Zen garden. Cream-colored walls accented with black wood and a red sushi bar display artsy photos and bold steel sculpture. Track lighting illuminates diners while a house/funk beat plays. High-backed leather booths are regal in size and command kingly views of the dining room.

The Food
This San Antonio-based chain pleases die-hard sushi fans and steak eating Texans alike. Start with a cooked item and follow up by ordering sushi. Served hot, the tappan yaki is a savory mixed grill with choice of meat accompanied by a healthy heaping of onion, green bell pepper, sprouts, asparagus, zucchini, and mushrooms. Kushi-agge is the perfect choice for fried food lovers; chicken, salmon, cheese or vegetable combinations lightly breaded, deep-fried and served with a sweet dipping sauce. Spider rolls are large and fresh sprinkled with chipotle mayo and masago caviar.

I have eaten at the one in SA many times. Now in Dallas I still eat the same things... the cosimo roll, the torreado roll, thinly sliced tuna or salmon sushimi, and more.....sooo good -ate there last night!

Pros: hot and fresh!

As a fairly experienced diner, allow me to say a few things about Sushi Zushi. But just a few, since the unfortunate experience does not warrent more effort. Can you say, "Twelve year olds serving unneccesarily expensive sushi in only the most mediocre of styles?" Whatever goes on in a kitchen in terms of excessive and juvenile emotionality certainly does not warrant a bottle of beer slammed down on a table so hard that eight people divided amongst three tables stop what they are doing so as to decide whether or not there's a maniac loose with a gun and requires innocent bystanders to duck under our tables in an emergent survivalistic action. Listen, at the end of one of my bitch-ass business days, I am ready for a more than a little service and at least some acceptable food. What should have (and could have) been a lovely early evening as a prelude to something more enjoyable, was cut short by some apparent snit a server had with other less important servers- at least in his and their minds. Guess what? The beer bottle-slamming adolescent was none other than the alleged manager! The whole thing was nothing less than overwhelmingly disappointing. Whomever owns the establishment needs to spend a couple of evenings observing from a quiet corner so that he/she/they become aware of the personality disturbances which are costing it its reputation. By the way, uni, is in my opinion, a way to gauge the standards of a sushi restaurant. If the sushi "chefs" fail to closely examine (including visual and olfactory inspection) the uni it serves before serving it, they are compromising an opportunity for a deal-breaking or deal-making relationship with would-be culinaires. Boo.

Pros: excellent apple martini

Cons: absurdly bad service
