What People Are Saying About Coal Vines Pizza

The Scene – Floor-to-ceiling wine shelves line this highly urban, crackling-with-energy dining room, with tables set so closely, patrons quickly learn to love thy neighbor. A patio in front offers an alfresco option. Solo diners, cell phones pressed to their ears, camp out at the bar under the eye of congenial bartender Craig Wolf and pay their respects to the portrait of Frank Sinatra on the wall. – – The Food – This is true New York-style pizza, right down to the coal-burning oven, blazing away at 900 degrees. Topping options are few--sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms…

Editor's Tips

Look Good:
Congenial bartender Craig Wolf goes by, simply, "Wolf."
Know Before You Go:
Brunch is Sunday 11am-1pm.
When to Go:
Prime time's a mob scene but night owls will appreciate the late-late closing time and the slightly surreal vibe of dining in the wee hours of the morning.
The Extras:
Coal Vines functions as a wine store, too, with near-retail prices for those who want to get a bottle along with their pizza to-go.

Worst dining experience ever

by Sunny1978 at Citysearch

This was definitely my all time WORST dining experience. The service was terrible from the waitstaff to the bartenders. They were rude and definitely made it clear that we were just another group of customers. The waitress was flaky and completely messed up our check and then tried to make us feel bad about it. The food was definitely average. This used to be a place I enjoyed visiting on occasion but I will never return. There are many more restaurants out there that treat their customers well and provide great service that I do not plan on wasting my time or money at Coal Vines.

  • Pros: Location
  • Cons: Terrible service, rude waitstaff, takes customers for granted

Good food, Great Service

by krause6479 at Citysearch

I have to be honest I took my wife to coal vines b/c of the mixed reviews that I have read about it. The reviews that I have looked over gave it high regards in the food catigory but very low in service. I must say that we had a pizza that was good, but service that was great. People that write these reviews must understand that when you take a group into a small establishment don't think that you are gods gift to the dollar, this business is out to make money. Take large groups at off times and if you must take a group that is large move quickly. You people that think b/c you go into this restaurant and spend money you own the table have got to get your head out!! If you enjoy the food go on off times to sit and chat or go when it is busy and move your a** period.

  • Pros: Friendly service, and good food
  • Cons: Parking

These People are Nasty

by jpcana at Citysearch

This is a place for the people of Dallas who don't demand even a decent service. The staff is rude and completely unprofessional. Don't go there unless you want to be treated like an animal.

I Believe in Good Pizza

by fantasmic at Citysearch

Top pizza in Dallas. "In Dallas" is an important qualifier. Not fine dining but a great place to eat. Take the time to flip over a hot slice and notice the slight browning underneath. Sauce to cheese to toppings ratio is good and it never arrives soggy or greasy. Hot, each slice is perfect for folding. Good wine specials and fair prices. Salads are delicious.

The place is reasonably priced, sort of a nice, cozy hole in the wall. Been amost a dozen times now and have an cccasional wait, but the place is small so we grab a bottle at the bar. If you sit in the back, Asian girl's section, Ann, guaranteed you'll get top notch service and honest food recommendations. Plus, they have late night hours which is very nice.

  • Pros: Good prices, friendly, good location.
  • Cons: Wait for party of 10 but quick service after seated.

Don't waste your time or money!!!!!!!!!!!

by raincloud9 at Citysearch

I've never taken the time out to write a review, but after the unacceptable service my friends and I received (while celebrating a birthday), I figured I owed future diners a preview of a night out at Coal Vines. The evening started out with a 90 minute wait, but what do you expect since the entire restaurant is made up of about twenty tables. We stood outside by the door, drinking the wine we bought at the overcrowded bar, since there was inadequate seating in the restaurant. When we were finally seated, we were rushed through our mediocre dinner, and our glasses and plates were cleared when it was obvious our evening there was not over yet. The final straw was when the host came to our table and said, "Are you about ready to go, we still have lots of people waiting to be seated." A fellow patron at another table overheard the host and was just as disgusted as we were. I approached the owner about the horrible experience we received at his establishment, and instead of trying to rectify the horrible service, he defended his host. I let him know that we would not be recommending this restaurant to anyone, and he said, "please don't", so that is exactly what I am doing. There are plenty of other trendy eateries in Dallas that offer impressive service with food worth a 90 minute wait. Do yourself a favor and take your money anywhere besides Coal Vines. Campisi's pizza is by far superior anyway!

  • Pros: not a thing
  • Cons: ungrateful proprietor, host, wait, seating, and service
