I am a hot yoga lover and was ready to try Sunstone after all the glowing reviews. I planned to try all the studios so I wouldn't miss anything but could only stand it three times even with the ten classes for ten dollars offer. It is definitely hot. I guess they do what they can about the smell but I have been to other hot studios that aren't that malodorous. It is better than the Bikram studio on that front at least. The worst part is the lousy instruction. I need a good visual and the instructors were essentially beginners in terms of performing the poses. At one studio, the teacher routinely left out part of the sun salutation. She also constantly referred to, what I assumed to be a "cheat sheet" throughout the class. This was their "metal" class which is supposed to be their most difficult. This instructor struggled with the poses more than most of the students. And the class itself was less than challenging. As all the instructors performed the entire class with the students, there were no student adjustments or any individualized instruction - and, people needed it. There was little or no emphasis on breath, no variations given to advance (or modify) poses, no mention of gaze, bandas, or any other core yoga principles. In short, lots of heat, not much yoga.

Pros: It's hot.

Cons: Yoga instruction is poor - and they don't do enough to control smell.

Response from this business

Fire, Earth, Water, Wood, and Metal at Sunstone Yoga (SY). We have 5 classes and each work together.

We encourage new students to focus on Fire/Earth for the first 10+ classes. Metal is a class that is not the right start for someone new to SY. For students who have an existing yoga practice prior to coming to SY please respect other methods and traditions. Within SY you will find consistency between each teacher and each class type. Please remember that if you are coming from a teacher outside of SY every yoga tradition approaches postures differently. There are many forms of Sun Salutation each claiming to be correct. It is often difficult to not get attached to the first version you learn. But it would be short sighted to assume other versions are wrong. When SY students tell us they are going on vacation and will be visiting a Non-SY studio we ask them to be open and to enjoy the differences. In our experience there is no right or wrong way. The ways we choose are from our extensive experience, but because we choose one way doesn’t mean we turn our nose up at other ways.

Great facilities, knowlegable and friendly instructors, well-defined classes, and very convenient schedules. Further more, free mat, free towels, free tea if you like some, and free seminars and workshops once in a while. I strongly recomment SUNSTONE Yoga studios to everyone!!

Pros: Ambience

Cons: N/A
