Editorial Review for Fred 62 – by Stephanie L. Smith

The Scene
Bowling-alley fashion sense, classic Hollywood charm and a chrome toaster on every table make Fred 62 the hippest place in town to get your chow on.

The Food
Expect creative riffs on comfort foods served up with funny names. Witness the golden, velvet Mac Daddy and Cheese, the towering ham and swiss of the Charles Bukowski, and the fluffy pancake, crisp-tender hash browns, ultra-crisp bacon and filling eggs of the Dime Bag. For arterial redemption, try one of the Japanese sobas: The Bang Bang's sweet fire of plum and hot pepper sauces makes it a standout. The best thing about 62's soggy fries is their presentation in an origami-folded brown paper bag. Finish off with a Punk Tart (homemade Pop Tart), bursting with fresh fruit and near lethal amounts of sugar, and you'll be ready to stay up with the area writers.

Great neighborhood diner that is very welcoming to ALL. Although the place can get very packed at times, the waiters dont seem to rush you, they are very curtious, friendly and unpretentious. This place is kind of retro, kind of new age, and attracts very interesting people with interesting thoughts or looks, or both. The day i went there, i probably saw all the possible shades of hair color ever created. The food was great as well. If you are a health freak, you might not like this place unles you order a salad and custom order the ingredients. They have great specialty sandwitches and they are not pricey at all ($7 - 9). Oh and before i forget, the mustard on the table is dijon which i thought was interesting. Oh and dont confuse the bathrooms for men and women, they are not labeled.

Pros: food, open late, ambience

Cons: parking
