Dallas >Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse
Not so great.
It's taken me one month to cautiously think about this review and try my best to given an honest account of the bbq at Sonnys. I'm no expert at bbq but I've had my fair share of bbq across texas. I think i have an idea of what food/ restaurants are good with an objective thought process. I went to school in Austin (UT) and ate at all the joints down there i.e. Saltlick, Rudy's, County Line etc. Saltlick is my favorite but the sauce could use some kick. Rudy's is great all around (never been to original location).
On to Sonny Bryan's (Inwood)...After hearing about sonny bryan's for many years and seeing them on TV, i finally decided to give them a try since I even had a free entree plate coupon after purchasing one of course. I place my order in their unique shack which i thought was cool. My gf and I ordered ribs, brisket with onion rings, beans, and potato salad.
I knew i was in trouble when I saw them warm up the ribs on a grill for a bout 1 minute. They were dry and hard. I can't recall the flavor because it was tough to eat. The brisket was tough as well and needed mass amounts of bbq sauce to get through. The onion rings were a delight though but the beans and potato salad is on par or worse than something you would get at a grocery store.
I heard that their franchise locations are much better and that the original location has changed since ownership changes or what not. I'm not too sure. Given I did go to the place at 6PM but I would believe the food should have been good to eat. I honestly don't know if the people who right positive reviews (4 or 5 stars) are drinking the Sonny Bryan's kool-aid but this place is worse then getting ribs at chili's, friday's, or applebee's. I can't speak for the other locations but the one on Inwood is not worth going too. I was very hungry as it was dinner time and I didn't even finish my plate. We took the leftovers home but we never even touched it. Needless to say, highly disappointed and you are best served goin anywhere else.
Peace Love and BBQ.
I've been eating at Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse for twenty years and I cannot get enough. I absolutely love a nice place of brisket, preferably from the business end, with links, fries and Sonny's signature sauce.
The original Sonny's is top notch, authentic, professional BBQ made the good old fashioned way.
Any time of day, Sonny Bryan's hits the spot.
Not as good as the reviews that I saw.... Since my wife and I moved from Oklahoma to texas we have been in search of a good barbeque. We tried a Sonny Bryans on the Fort Worth side of town because of some reviews that we read. I must say that we were pretty disappointed. The service was good, the prices were okay. The food was just very mediocre at best. In Oklahoma there is this place called the Rib Cribb which is the best ever so we do have pretty high expectations. It seems like each place we have tried in Texas doesn't seem to be able to live up to what we were used to in Oklahoma. We thought this to be strange considering all I hear about Texas barbeque. At this point we are still searching.
try the Frito Pie.
tenderly chopped -bq and beans topped with cheese. depending on location, extras include: chives & sour cream. pile the Fritos on top, pour some -bq sauce over 'em and get on it.
LSD for the 40-something.
Best barbecue of the planet. This is by far the best barbecue place you will ever find. You can easly notice the meat is the finnest you can get in terms of barbecue. Their sauce is great, plus its really convenient and nice.
DAllas' BEST BBQ!!!. My Dad started taking me to the orifinal Sonny Bryan's over 30 years ago and I still think it is the best in the city! Their Brisket is by far the best - always very flavorful and juicy. They may have lost a bit of the ambience in tbheir expansion, but the BBQ is ultimately what made them and it still ROCKS!!!
Best Mexican food in town.. The food was excellent. The prices were good and the waitstaff were very friendly. I particularly liked the BBQ Pork Ribs & Onion Rings.
Boo!. I hated the BBQ so much that I had to throw it out.. I'm not from Tx and I was really excited to try this place out after reading a couple of reviews, and needless to say, I was pretty dissappointed.
I just don't get it. The downtown location is mediocre at best. The one on Inwood is a roadside dumpster of a building that is fly and creepy crawler inhabited. Good Lord, this is Texas and you want to hold this up as the best? There are too many better spots to eat BBQ within a two-square mile radius for this eye-sore on blacktop to be honored. If you must, get it to-go, but you have been warned. This only goes to prove that a sentimental favorite is hard to rate rationally for a lot of people. My guess is that good BBQ houses just roll their eyes at the collective ignorance in this choice.
Warning for tea drinkers.
The BBQ is OK. The Catering end of it kinda scares me. Their tea urns are kept uncovered in the open kitchen and I discovered a white slimy film in the bottom of the urn, I told the Catering director to have them cleaned out with bleach and to monitor them on a daily basis, because tea can carry a bacteria. He said he wasnt aware that tea can carry a bacteria. He says Ah! dont worry about it, the water that goes in them gets pretty hot.
So much for trying to loook out for the Public.
