Editorial Review for Lola the Restaurant – by J.P. Anderson
The Scene
Set back from the street in a cozy, old clapboard house, this spot is comfortable and refreshingly un-trendy. Simple, tasteful decor includes hardwood floors, pistachio walls and white tablecloths in three intimate dining areas. The place buzzes most nights with well-dressed couples and corporate groups, but tables are well-spaced and the noise level stays pleasantly low, making for easy conversation.
The Food
The rotating menu features creative preparations of classic ingredients, from grilled quail with apricot and endive to beef tenderloin with braised veal cheek. Wilted spinach and black mission figs provide the perfect counterpoint to melt-in-the-mouth-tender braised short rib. Crenshaw melon and prosciutto make for a delicious, sweet-salty combo in heirloom tomato salad. Black-truffle butter is a decadent addition to house-made basil fettuccine with toasted pine nuts and cherry tomatoes. Dessert is a toss-up between banana crepes or Texas peach croustade with blueberries and cinnamon ice cream.

Having previously run an upscale restaurant in Dallas, I can very critical when it comes to service, quality, atmosphere and presentation. Wendy was our server and providede excellent wine choices for the courses we selected. Every course was just fabulous. They are even adept at taking care of vegetarians! Call ahead for reservations and if you have specific dietary needs. Your Valentine will definitely feel special in this upscale "hidden" jewel.
Pros: Valet, multi-course diverse menu, great wait staff
Cons: You may feel a little light-headed when you leave

Eat here when they have foie gras and filet mignon. Desserts and salads are always terrible at places like this, so don't come in expecting much if you opt for them. But the entrees...if they sound good to you, you'll be very pleased with the preparation. Service is very cool and friendly. I ate here in jeans once (first time I visited), and nobody yelled at me. Every time thereafter, I dressed up for the food. It deserves slacks.
