Editorial Review for Loon Bar & Grill – by Jeff Speicher
The Scene
This longtime favorite hangs its hat on a relaxed atmosphere. The exterior is nondescript, but inside, dim lighting and low tunes set the scene for an informally hip group of party-goers. A brick wall with three wide open archways bisects a square bar; on each side are separate rooms that burst with loud conversation. Midnight-black tabletops abound as groups gravitate toward the secondhand couches and recliners at the foot of two stone fireplaces.
The Draw
The bar is known for some of the stiffest drinks in town. Casual dress allows patrons to be themselves in an unpretentious environment that successfully combines bar mingling with seating space. The attractive patrons munch on surprisingly tasty dishes that range from a hearty $5 Loon burger to the tender $17 filet mignon.

The Loon is a fantastic bar that can be just about whatever you want it to be. Need dinner at 7pm on sunday? They got it. Looking for a hook up at midnight on Saturday? Check. In town on business on a Monday and you need a place to have a few drinks and work on that proposal due in the morning? No prob. The reason for its versatility is four-fold. 1. Great staff. These folks don't mess about while on duty. Even if you are the only guy in the bar...they won't be chatting with each other and ignoring you. Whoever trained them did a very good job. 2. Stiff drinks. Hell...stiff drinks are useful just about 24 hours a day. If I want a drink at midnight or noon...I want it to be a stiff one. 3. Good food. Food here is restaurant quality +...not crappy greasy bar food like some Bars and Grills in Uptown. 4. Last and perhaps most importantly....the crowd changes in both numbers and attitude right when you want it too. Like clockwork...this place has just the right crowd at just the right times. Doesn't happy in most bars. But you'll never see a saturday where it isn't packed with single women and you'll never come on a sunday when it isn't chilled out people talking and just hanging out. I live in the Cedar Springs/Uptown Area and I generally have a drink at one of the many bars in uptown every night of the week. Of them all...the Loon definitely ranks as one of my all time favorites.
Pros: Stiff Drinks, Good Service, Great Food, Excellent Ambience
Cons: Sometimes a line during busy hours.

I worked @ The Loon Bar of Dallas for 8 years. The owner is a kick in the pants, but sure as hell knows how to run a business! Yeah, no doubt the drinks beat anyplace I've ever worked or drank, but kudos to the staff. These young good-lookers run their asses off to provide fast and furious service to keep up with Gonzo's standards. As for the clientele, I'll always be fond of the "old-timers" day crowd, be ready to hear some great "Loon Lore". I quit drinking some time ago but if ever I find myself in Dallas again, The Loon is the first place you'll find me. Congrat's Gonzo!
Pros: EVERYTHING
Cons: NOTHING
