Editorial Review for Sushi on McKinney – by Nancy Myers
In Short
An artsy slide show featuring works of local artists flips in the background at this smallish (80 tables) casual spot, complementing the skillfully prepared food. Among the 100 sushi specialties are the McKinney roll with yellowtail fish and the Devil roll featuring salmon, both accompanied by spicy mustard. Cooked options are also on the menu, including beef, pork, chicken and shrimp. A fruit plate and green-tea ice cream make up the dessert list.

I'm not sure how this place could possibly get bad reviews. It's one of those kind of "hole in the wall" types of places, that once you've found it, you don't know how you survived before that! The staff is sooo friendly. They are very accommodating and make me feel at home each time I come in. My glasses are always refilled before I even notice they are low! I come here a lot, so I know the service is consistent. The rolls are delicious, super fresh and CHEAP for the quality. My favorites are the sea eel, robb roll, mckinney roll and the devil rolls. The decor is a little outdated, but I find it charming that they let their food speak for itself, without feeling the need to distract you with lots of modern lighting and pretentious music. Perfect place to grab some dinner with friends before a night out.
Pros: cheap, fresh, great service, fast, casual
Cons: ambience

I was very disappointed because I was hoping Sushi on McKinney could become one of my regular hangouts. However, the edamame was cold, off-color, dripping wet, and topped with table salt. The sushi was chewy and fishy. The service was lousy. It was like pulling teeth just to get a refill of water. The ambience was reminiscent of the 1908s with splashes of pink, purple, and teal. It was dimly-lit, but not in the "romantic" sense--more in the "half the lightbulbs in the fixtures were burned out" sort of way. And, the place just felt unclean. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I'm not at all a picky diner, but this experience definitely ranks in my top ten worst dining experiences ever.
