Editorial Review for Cuba Libre Cafe – by Holly Hickman
The Scene
This vibrant bi-level restaurant and bar features two outdoor patios--one upstairs, one down--and an energetic Technicolor interior. Blue booths, multicolored plates and napkins, Keith Haring-esque murals and silver wall sculptures add to the fiesta.
The Food
The Libre spinach salad is one of the strongest items on the menu: hearts of palm, avocado, bacon, goat cheese and pine nuts all united by a sunny passion fruit vinaigrette. The tender, sweet roasted pork asado is glazed with a mango-barbecue sauce and accompanies black beans and a crunchy tortilla-strip coleslaw that's piled high. The sugarcane-soy-seared yellowfin tuna is fresh and bright tasting. It comes with delicious sauteed rice with pineapple studs and a salad that combines ice-cold lettuce with hot, crunchy crab and tortilla strips. Chips cost extra, but the skinny, sweet plantain chips and roasted tomato salsa are worth it.

I was so disappointed, I had wanted to try this restaurant for some time. I went with friends from work, sat in the bar and although the food was good (very camparible to Glorias who provide chips, salse and black bean dip to all tables without cost to the customer) the service was very bad. The table we sat at needed to be cleaned as the customers who sat there before us had eaten and the restaurant did not clean the table before we sat down. When we asked the waitress to clean the table she wiped it with a dry cloth, we asked her to actually clean the table, she did but was visible irritated. I spilled my drink after a couple of sips, the waitress handed me a stack of coctail napkins to clean it up myself. She brought me another drink but charged me for both. I of course paid and I understand that I the drink spill was my fault but I believe most any other restaurant would have not charged me for the first drink. The waitress asked at one time if we were finished with our appetizers, we were not so she left them but came back a few minutes later and took them off the table without asking us. When were ready to leave an asked the waitress to spiit the check we were told that it was a restaurant policy not to split checks. We finally got them to split the check after a lengthy explanation to the manager who was irritagle and talked to us in an angry tone. When we informed the manager that the waitress did not say anyting when she took our order she went off with an explanation of how unreasonable it was for us to expect that they would inform every table of the policy. Really? I am often asked when in a group if the order should be on one check or not. The manager also lectured us about how, on our next visit we needed to inform the waitress prior to ordering if we require seperate checks. Don't worry, we will not be back. There are a whole city full of restaurants with fantaitic food to spend my money on bad customer service.

The place is called Cuba Libre, so it just makes sense to try to signature drink. I thoroughly enjoyed everything. I absolutely loved the brisket tacos and strongly recommend ordering a Cuba Libre (like a frozen rum & Coke). It gets pretty busy there, but it's a great place as long as you're not too uptight.
Pros: Cuba Libre
Cons: Can get crowded
