Avila's is the definitive Tex-Mex restaurant in the same way that Katz's is the consummate deli, or Kreuz Market the archetypal Texas barbecue. It may not be the best, or it may be, but either way it's what that kind of food is all about. Oh, and it's awesome, by the way.
I love this place. I eat here every two weeks. Seriously, their tamales (especially the cheese ones) are great. The pozole is pretty good, but the black bean enchiladas are my favorite.
Best fajita's in Dallas!. Love this place. Service is always excellent. Food is always great!
Great mexican food. I ate at Availa's yesterday and tried their mole enchiladas. They were great. Best mole in town and the food has gotten better since the reopening. Better specials, more consistent service, full bar. Can't wait to go back for more.
Fresh, Delicious Mexican Food. I don't know what all these bad reviews are about, but would suggest you probably get treated the way you treat other people. The food at Avila's is not "Tex-Mex" but Mexican. And it's great. Fresh, flavorful and generous servings. I've been twice in the last week, and had two of the best meals ever. Yes, it's a small place. That's pretty obvious when you drive up, so it shouldn't be a surprise. And the service is a little spotty, but once I gave my waiter a smile and thanked him for a little favor he did for me, I was treated like a queen. I'm planning to become a regular there, and the friends who accompanied me loved it. Be nice, and you'll be treated wonderfully, and the food is amazing.
We loved it.
First time was impressive, I would suggest ignoring the bad reviews and form your own opinion.
We ordered chicken fajitas, chili rellanos, single tamale and queso. Everything was great and left overs were sure as heak taken home. Same cost as anywhere else in town, great portion size on the fajitas and man - can't beat the rellanos. Service is not bad, it's just not great. who cares, i'm there to eat not get the warm fuzzies from a stranger.
Highly Recommended, will be back.
Guy Fierri/Food Network Got It Right!!!. Guy picked some of the best dishes, but there's more to the place than brisket gorditas, posole and tamales. The chiles rellenos and mole are wonderful. Pollo con calabasa is just like my grandma's. Save room for the bread pudding!!!
Eat somewhere else!!!. I saw this on Diner's Driver-ins and Dives with Guy Fieri and the Food Network totally screwed me and my family over on this one. Avila's is not for those who grew up eating TRUE tex-mex as this was what you would find like, TAMALES IN A CAN!!! The food was very bland and then at 2am indegestion kicked in!!! McDonald's or Churches or heck hamburger helper would have done the trick but the food is not how my Mexican grandmother would have made it!!! Poor quality to be called Mexcian food!!
Real Mexican food Great Service.
This is the food my grandmother made when I was a kid. If your used to the over spiced over salted food at On the border or other chains this place is not for you.
The chicken posole is the best in town, they checked my glass every 5 minutes, lots of chip and salsa, the best in town. I saw Avila's on the Food Channel's "Dinners Drive-in and Dives," so I had to try it and I'm glad I did. Muy Bueno!!
Rude waiter - loud restaurant. I have been to this restaurant about 4 times and had 3 good experiences, but went with friends and had a bad experience. There was some confusion on our order and the waiter became insensitive and hateful to my guests. We made the best of the evening despite the surly waiter, but I am really considering never going back. Restaurant is very noisy. Dont go if you want to have a conversations with your table.
Rude & Incompatent. So we get to the restaurant and tell them how many we will be seating. The seat us fairly quickly, but after a few minutes of waiting for the rest of our party to show the tell us that they have a large part of 10 coming in soon and that my party of 8(minus 2 people making there to the place) will need to hurry. So after about 10 minutes our remaining party members show and the staff rushed us to place our orders. So we accommodate them. We rush our orders in and while waiting we receive out appetizers of guacamole and queso. Both of which were flavorless, I mean you could have gotten better stuff from Taco Bell or Taco Bueno, So after eating our over priced flavorless appetizers we end up waiting about a total of 45 minutes waiting for our main courses. Ok so we get the food and proceed to try and enjoy our parties company and food, but I have to say that honestly we could have gotten better food from Pancho's Mexican buffet at 1/5th the price. The food is OVER priced as well as overrated by D magazine and Guy Fietti of the Food Network. I will NOT go back for my birthday again next year, nor will I ever return let alone recommend anyone to eat at that closet sized restaurant. DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!!!! I PROMISE YOU'D BE BETTER OFF EATING CONCESSION stand nachos or a frozen mexican style tv dinner. The employees are rude and the food S U C K S!!!!!
