In Short – Customers enter this no frills restaurant and get in line to order breakfast, lunch or just a pie. The lineoleum floors, formica table tops and booths are surrounded by knick knacks and nostalgic items covering the walls. The cinnamon rolls are the size of a small Latin American country and go well with creamy buttermilk. Think Cracker-Barrel-meets-truck-stop: a place for down-home grits, ham steaks, fried chicken, corn muffins, cobbler and peach pie.

Open on Sunday

by JeanCarol

Haven't been yet, but the site had conflicting notes about being open 7 days a week and closed on Sundays. So I called and they are open on Sunday till 2pm. I'll let you know how the food tasted after we eat there.

  • Pros: Open on Sunday 8-2
  • Cons: none

The sad passing of a landmark

by Guairdean

I hadn't been to the Mecca in quite a while. Work and Family didn't leave much time. On a whim I called to find out if they happened to be open on Sunday. Much to my delight, I was told that they're open until 2:00pm. My wife and I went for breakfast this morning. We ordered eggs (hers over medium, mine scrambled well), bacon (flat and crisp), grits (for me), hashbrowns (for her), an English muffin (for her), and wheat toast (for me). Undercooked fried eggs were delivered to my wife, my scrambled eggs were browned on the outside and undercooked on the inside. The bacon was nearly raw, the grits were extremely runny (and instant) and swimming in butter (I like to decide whether to use butter or pepper). The wheat toast was correct, but the waitress was under the impression that I wanted lots of butter and assured me it was heavily buttered (it was the only time she expressed any concern about the quality of the meal). Fortunately, it wasn't. My wife's English muffin, however, was dripping butter. In years gone by the Mecca was a beacon of quality food and service, now I'd put it in the same category as Waffle House.

Best breakfast in town!

by stormytexas

This restaurant is not exactly in the best part of town so a lot of people don't know about it. If you are looking for a hearty, fast, plentiful and traditional breakfast, you can do no better than The Mecca. Most of the waitstaff have been there for decades and service is fast and friendly. Great omelets, pancakes of all sorts (try the banana pancakes) and just about every kind of breakfast goody you can name. We love to take out of town guests there as a great start to a sightseeing day in DFW.

  • Pros: Great food, reasonable prices, fast service and big portions.
  • Cons: On Harry Hines.
