Knife-wielding chefs put on a show at this communal Japanese grill..
In Short
Benihana started out as a tiny four-table restaurant in New York City's theater district before becoming an international chain. Diners sit around large tables where chefs ostentatiously chop, slice, stir-fry and grill. Entree options are simple--shrimp, chicken, steak and scallops--and preparation is uniform. Every entree comes with a similar stock of sides: rice, onion soup, shrimp appetizer, iceberg lettuce drizzled with dressing, sauteed vegetables and green tea.
Great meal - so/so service. Sushi was fresh and good, wasabi had a great kick to it, scallops and filet were cooked perfectly but the service was so/so. Our waitress seemed lost, difficult to understand and not good with suggesting items to a 1st time visitor who was with me. Our chef did not do anything but cook the food. I was disappointed since half of the fun of Benihana's is watching the chef prepare the food while flinging items in the air. We will go back - hopefully we will be seated at a table where the chef is more entertaining.
The food was outstanding.. This was our first time there. It was so neat to watch our chef prepare our meals. We were kind of upset that it is non smoking but when we were seated we did not even think about it because the food kept coming. I really enjoyed it because you did not have to order side items. Everyone was pretty much served the same thing except for the main course. I will definitly recommend to my friends. Not crazy about japanese food? You do not have to be they have steak, shrimp and lobster. We will be going back.
Family fun. Excellent food and good service. Our server did not put on much of a show, but that was okay b/c they were very accomodating to my family of nine.
Ok, but.... The food was good, but my chef didn't put on much of show. It may have been related to the fact that I got there right after opening (but with a reservation) and was the only one at my table.
