I am a hot yoga lover and was ready to try Sunstone after all the glowing reviews. I planned to try all the studios so I wouldn't miss anything but could only stand it three times even with the ten classes for ten dollars offer. It is definitely hot. I guess they do what they can about the smell but I have been to other hot studios that aren't that malodorous. It is better than the Bikram studio on that front at least. The worst part is the lousy instruction. I need a good visual and the instructors were essentially beginners in terms of performing the poses. At one studio, the teacher routinely left out part of the sun salutation. She also constantly referred to, what I assumed to be a "cheat sheet" throughout the class. This was their "metal" class which is supposed to be their most difficult. This instructor struggled with the poses more than most of the students. And the class itself was less than challenging. As all the instructors performed the entire class with the students, there were no student adjustments or any individualized instruction - and, people needed it. There was little or no emphasis on breath, no variations given to advance (or modify) poses, no mention of gaze, bandas, or any other core yoga principles. In short, lots of heat, not much yoga.

Pros: It's hot.

Cons: Yoga instruction is poor - and they don't do enough to control smell.

Response from this business

Fire, Earth, Water, Wood, and Metal at Sunstone Yoga (SY). We have 5 classes and each work together.
Posted on 09/10/2007
We encourage new students to focus on Fire/Earth for the first 10+ classes. Metal is a class that is not the right start for someone new to SY. For students who have an existing yoga practice prior to coming to SY please respect other methods and traditions. Within SY you will find consistency between each teacher and each class type. Please remember that if you are coming from a teacher outside of SY every yoga tradition approaches postures differently. There are many forms of Sun Salutation each claiming to be correct. It is often difficult to not get attached to the first version you learn. But it would be short sighted to assume other versions are wrong. When SY students tell us they are going on vacation and will be visiting a Non-SY studio we ask them to be open and to enjoy the differences. In our experience there is no right or wrong way. The ways we choose are from our extensive experience, but because we choose one way doesn’t mean we turn our nose up at other ways.

It is a great atmosphere and clean studio. Every time I walk in, every instructor always knows my name and makes me even more excited to be there and get ready for my yoga practice. There is a wonderful variety of classes that challenge not only my body by using strength, but also for my mind, by helping me to de-stress and focus on myself. It has been unlike any other work out I've done and has helped compliment every fitness challenge I take on. My endurance is better and so is my strength. Every instructor has something new to teach and is highly qualified and motivating!

Pros: Great value for all they offer!

Awesome Yoga studio. Quality staff and instruction. I've never found a gym that can compare to this experience. If you are not looking to bulk up, this is the best workout you could ever be a part of. It has helped me loose body fat and replace it with lean functional muscle. I thought Yoga was all about streching and being flexible, but through this studo, I have come to realize it is about strength and flexibility and bringing my body back into balance. If you want the best fitness experience of your life come check it out... you'll be glad you did. They even have a 10 days for $10 to try it out. I never thought I'd be good at yoga, but now I see I feel good because of Sunstone Yoga.

Pros: Instruction, Variety, free Mats/Towels, beginner friendly, huge supportive community

Cons: Everyone cares about you, instead of wanting you to quit like at the gyms

Sunstone has a great variety of class styles to build strength, flexibility and slim your body down - whatever your fitness goal. The instructors and fellow students are always friendly. The yoga room and changing rooms are clean. The mats and towels provided are nice because I don't have to worry about bringing anything with me. Give the $10 special intro a shot and check out any location you are close to.

Pros: free mat and towel service

I go to all of the Sunstone studios and I love this location. Sunstone has helped me with my health and happiness! Everyone at the studio is super nice and they are always smiling (hence the happiness line in my review). As soon as you walk into any of the studios you feel right at home. The space is clean, bright and full of well-trained instructors. The classes rock and since they offer different styles there is something there for everyone. My recommendation: GO TO SUNSTONE!!! Everyone deserves a place to be healthy and happy.

Pros: Great location, awesome space, amazing classes and instructors

Cons: That I can't visit this location more...

The first time I went to Sunstone, I didn't know what to expect. I had never done yoga and wanted to try something new. With the $10 for 10 days offer, you can't go wrong!! The classes were great and I have learned so much. The instructors made learning the postures so easy. It didn't matter that I had never done yoga before, I feel great and have a new lease on life! If you ever wanted to try something different, Sunstone Yoga is the way to go!

Pros: Great place to learn yoga

Cons: need more studios

When I walked into Sunstone I immediately felt the stress roll off my shoulders. The classes they provide are designed for every level, when I did my first class I was so nervous I was very concerned about how my performance would be rated, I was worried about them trying to change my religion, I was worried about my excess weight, and thought I would be surrounded by thin vegetarians that passed too much gas. Finally I just got over it and after months of procrastinating walked into the studio and just gave it a whirl. It was the best $10 I ever spent, the first class hard, it was hot and I was “out of shape”. The instructor was great, she was very supportive and encouraging, and said some things that made feel at ease she said “forget the person beside you, you are here today for yourself and no one else, be happy you made the effort to walk into the room today”, and she was right, I got over my fears and just turned up. The class had approx 25 people in it, I felt O.K body wise there were people in there that were all shapes and sizes, and I was pleased to see people like me in their first class just trying to do what the teacher was directing me to do. I couldn’t do everything perfect but by end of the 10 days I could see a huge improvement from the first day. I even lost some weight! I did what the teacher said , she said just keep coming back each day and see what happens. I am still a beginner student and I try to get in to class 4 times a week. I love the heat and I am loving how I feel.

Pros: Friendly Staff, free towels

Cons: Not in New York yet

The room is so quiet you can hear your sweat fall on the towel below you, so you can really access the deep meditative benefits of yoga in this studio. The same professional, friendly, and knowledgable teachers work at all the Sunstone yoga studios; the way they provide mats, towels and showers make it really easy for a busy person to squeeze that 90 minutes of personal time into their day.

Pros: parking, location, class schedule, free mats and towels, great classes

Cons: Midnight water class only once a year
