the gourgeous chubby bartender was s ooooooo nice, loved the decor, strong drinks, and stiff bartenders! the wait staff was really nice, soooooooo love this place, the other reviews i read those people just dont get it, get a clue people, oh yeah the door guy hot!

Unless they get a new staff, avoid this place like the plague.

Minus the door guy, the staff is without a question the most RUDE, unwelcoming in Dallas. AVIDBARGOER, thinking he's doing a service, said it perfect: the staff doesn't want to work. Shut up and sip your drink. How "avid" are you? SMU law students have what owners want...money, but the staff's too lazy to care. One drink??? My group is 30-something professionals, not kids, and we were treated just as poorly. Here's my take on the place:

I have never felt less welcome in a bar in my life. NEVER. The staff and management complained constantly in front of guests about how they wanted a dead night, but weren't getting one. They were rude when we were trying to find a place for our party of 10 to sit -- and even bitched at us for taking a table from another girl's section...3 feet away. After all that, we NEVER had a waitress so much as look at us -- even the one whose section we were in.

My favorite was the manager screaming that "...the next person in the (non-descript) service well (no mats, no rubber, no bar, no sign...just a computer and a 10-foot strip in the MIDDLE of the bar) would be kicked out!

WTF!? Several people that had just arrived and immediately left. It was uncomfortable in the bar at that point.

THEN, I tried to close out and discovered the bartender had put over 30 drinks on my tab when in reality my girlfriend, friend and I had maybe 8 or 9. He claimed my GF kept ordering expensive beers (i drink bud light) and liquor she doesn't like. In fact, according to him she drank 16 of these! Fact: she was at the bar ONCE to get me a Bud Light -- I did all the ordering. After a long argument and being called "non-friendly" words, the old bartender adjusted my tab and TOSSED it at me.

Until they overhaul the staff I would avoid this place. I'm not biased -- read the other reviews. We're a nice, laid-back group, not loud drunks...but we were treated as such. This place needs to clean house.

went here with a few friends. The bartender was a chubby boy with black hair who was too busy flirting with some girl to pay attention to us. The food was awful and drinks were weak. I would rather go anywhere else in uptown but here!"

Over charged me twice

Charged my credit card twice in the bar and then said could not check on it for 2 days. When told to look into it sooner they hung up on me. Would never do business with them again.

great place

I read the review by shackleford, and i was at the bar that wendsday night.

as i was sitting there a group of abnoxiuos SMU law students come in and totally acted like the spoiled brats they are. The vibe went from a goodtime to a D bag fest in a matter of 30 seconds! and by the way im soooooo glad the bartender told those loud rude spoiled brats they could only have 1 drink, tell you the truth they shouldnt havehad that...The place is great till the entitled crowd comes in.. thanx bartender for telling them to leave, way to go!

THE WORST SERVICE AND BARTENDERS IN DALLAS

15 of my friends and I went to the Stoneleigh P on a Wednesday night. The place was DEAD. Maybe ten people in the whole bar. Most bartenders would be excited to see a nicely dressed big group on a slow night. (TIPS!) But this bartender, heretoafter referred to as "surfer boy" (because he looks like some piece of trash you'd see in a bad punk rock music video) was not. For the record, we are definitely the big tipping types. We were not rude. Were we a little drunk and somewhat loud? Yes...but last I checked, this was a bar and that is what bars are for. Literally 5 MINUTES after walking into this bar, Surfer Boy told us we could only have one drink. Whatever his reason was for kicking us out, it would be unacceptable to any bar owner. In those 5 minutes no one got in a fight, threw up, broke something, or did anything that normally causes one to get kicked out of a bar. I hadn't even ordered a drink yet. Since I was only going to get one drink at this place I ordered a scotch on the rocks. It comes back a scotch and water with so little scotch in it, it might as well have been water. I'm naturally assuming this guy is trying to rip me off. Surfer Boy has already kicked me out of a bar for no reason, why should he bother giving me a decent drink? So I call him out on it. He feigns innocence and lets me watch as he pours a scotch on the rocks.

The moral of the story is this: If you're a bartender, you should accept that your job is inevitably going to put you into contact with drunk people. If you take good care of them, they'll tip you well. It is your job. You owe at least that much to the owner of the bar. It a pretty easy job that pays well when done right, but apparently, surfers can't do it. I will never go back to this bar again. There are too many bars in Dallas to patronize a bar with bad service.

And if the owner of this bar reads this: Fire Surfer Boy, he's the worst bartender I've ever met and I've drank on all 7 continents.

not good tasting food

I walked into Stoneleigh P right when they opened on Sunday. The service was good & friendly. However, the food was less than excellent. I ordered the French Toast. I was expecting the norm (bread drenched in milk & eggs, then pan fried). Well, what I got was an English Muffin grilled w/ butter, then lightly showered w/ powdered sugar. The menu stated that it was served w/ fruit (it came w/ 2 lousy pieces of orange slices). Served on the side was maple syrup. An extra $2 for bacon that was less than perfect too. I guess their specialty are the burgers. Then, they should stick to the infamous burgers & not sell the other stuff because they do not seem experienced in breakfast foods.

• Pros: Friendly Service
• Cons: My little brother can cook better than them.

WHY A "P"?

It was 1973. Nixon had the White House, Dallas had (for the first time since Prohibition) open bars, and Tom Garrison had a vision: a hangout for nonconformists?a bar with real food?a place where people meet to talk?where guys and gals feel comfortable just hanging by themselves, reading or relaxing, sipping something comforting.

In a city mad for cutesy singles bars and theme restaurants, do what no one else dares: have no theme.

In a city where developers gleefully bulldoze art deco landmarks to erect neo-Disney schlock, move into an old building and change next to nothing.

Amazingly, Garrison found four other eccentrics willing to back him. The five of us leased a World War I era drugstore on Maple Avenue, across from the Stoneleigh Terrace Hotel, and began doing what needed to be done to sell food and drink.

We left the old drugstore cabinets and fixtures just as they were, turning the soda counter into a bar. We intended to operate under the drugstore's original name, The Stoneleigh Pharmacy.

Then, days before our planned opening, evil bureaucrats struck. Citing an ancient law requiring "pharmacies" to have to have a licensed pharmacist on duty, the bureaucrats refused to process the final paperwork.

What was to be done? Redoing all our paperwork and re-filing with all the government agencies would take weeks. Sending Garrison back to school for a pharmacology degree would take even longer.

"Not to worry," said our lawyer, "I've got the solution right here." And pulling a very small bottle out of his briefcase, he painted white-out over "harmacy" on every page of the official forms. The bureaucrats, realizing they were defeated, accepted the papers and slunk away. And so in April, 1973, we opened The Stoneleigh P.

• Pros: Most items on the sunday menu are around $6.00! Specials all the time too!
• Cons: a little hard to find, but worth it.

GREAT ATMOSPHERE for anyone!!! Great customer service! Decent food.

I LOVE the stoneleigh p! It is the best bar in uptown. In an area so overrun with stylish new places and everyone dressed to the nines, you can come to the stoneleigh in your suit or pajamas and no one will care! The place is so easy going and not wild and crazy like most uptown places. Sometimes post-game nights it gets a bit too loud and occasionally a wedding party from the hotel accross the street will create some maddness, but for the most part GREAT PLACE. The staff is wonderful and very friendly. The food could use some help. If you're hungry while you are already there, then they have you covered, but I wouldn't make diner plans here...I would eat elsewhere and then come here. Some call the burger RUSTIC and say they are unique and really good....I call them burgers on wierd buns w/ no American cheese and no french fries or ketchup! The queso verde dip is good. Its NOT queso dip like us Texans are used to...its a green verde salsa w/ manchego shredded cheese in it. ...more like a salsa dip w/ cheese in it. Good, but don't expect Texas Queso!

• Pros: great atmosphere, great staff, easy going, dressy or casual,
• Cons: food is so-so, some say the burger are unique therefore good...but i say no.

Famous burgers, full bar and historic setting in a 1930s pharmacy make this Uptown bar just what the doctor ordered.

Stoneleigh P channels the spirit of its original building with black-and-white photographs of medicinal items stocking the antique pharmacy cabinets, Texas memorabilia and two working jukeboxes. As the sun goes down, this restaurant becomes more of a bar, serving "Drugstore Drinks," beers and hard liquor at the converted soda counter.
